Participatory art project

RETRACE:MI is a participatory art project  that consisted of collecting stories from Southwest Michigan’s Latino and Asian community members. The recorded voices were interwoven into a soundscape that plays inside a tuk-tuk, a three-wheeled motorized vehicle that is particularly common in the Global South. The project is ongoing and has occurred in various parts of Michigan.

Retrace:MI was supported in part by the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Ford Foundation, Southwest Airlines, and the Surdna Foundation through a grant from the NALAC Fund for the Arts Grant Program. Research for this project was supported by a 2016–17 Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award as well as by the WMU Frostic School of Art, Western Michigan University; and by a 2017 Kalamazoo Artistic Development Initiative Grant from the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo.
